Paul Components conversion kit (part 2) and the Syncros Ti Seatpost

I have had to work a lot the last coupe of days so I did not have that much time to keep the Blog up to date, although it has just been a few day since the last post

Since then I bought the long sought for Paul front derri Conversion kit on ebay.
Sometimes you get lucky,..and so did i this time.
I found a conversion kit in the right colour, the same colour as the front derri is.
Because i was not at home at the ending time of the ebay auction i used a sniper to do the work for me so i received an email with the good news a minute after the auction ended, i got it ! YEAH!

It is the middle 2 parts that I was after to make the top pull a down pull derri.
The other two parts are the downpull parts, the parts i already have offcourse so if there is someone i can help our with these parts just drop me a line and we can work something out.
If not, no worries, i love to keep the parts as spares , i know for sure they will be of use sometime.

The second part i got is a Ti Syncros post for the Fat Chance.
I now have 4 different seatposts for the Yo Eddy, in the rare 29,4 mm size.
- Syncros Titanium
- Syncros Alu (Black white decals)
- Syncros Alu (clear black decal)
- Ringle Moby (Blue)
Which one i am going to use, i do not know yet, i guess i will play with the setup,..the seatposts i do not use,..i hitnk i keep them,...i am such a bad seller ;)

And last but not least,..got some new Syncros decals for the Syncros stem and seatpost from Gil, thanks Gil, they look great.

Found some technical details on the internet:
NUKE PROOF Ti Race ATB Frame
Nuke Proof builds each frame 100% in house, from the tooling design, to mitering the titanium, to laying the beads. The frame has oversized tubes and a sloping top tube to increase bottom bracket stiffness. The seat stays and top tube are situated offset to each other which alleviates a "whippy" feel in the rear triangle often found in other titanium frames. Each frame, weighing just 3.3 lbs., is designed with suspension-ready geometry. The attention to detail and time dedicated to each frame results in perfection! Bottom bracket height: 11.5", Chainstay length: 16.75", Seatpost: 27.0 mm, Headset 1 1/8", Top pull derailleur: 1.25", Titanium (frames): 3AL/2.5V, Titanium (dropouts): 6AL/4V, Frame size 20", Center to Center 18", Top Tube 23.5", Angles Head/Seat 71/73, Head Tube 5" (127mm).

The SYNCROS seatpost

HMM,..it is starting to get a SYNCROS blog ;)
Today i received the SYNCROS seatpost from the US, unfortunately it is not as good as i hoped,..but no worries, i get another 2 next week, both SYNCROS, 1 in black which looks great, and 1 in Ti,..both from the UK.
The problem with seatposts for the Fat Chance Yo Eddy is the size, it is a 29,4 diameter and this is pretty rare,....in Titanium is is ultra rare.
Also the blue Ringle post is unique, especially the state it is in but this one will be sold to a fellow Fat Chance owner in Italy soon.
Because i do not like the scuffed look of the Syncros is will take of tke black anno with caustic soda and polish it to clear alu ,..which will be fine.
For the Syncros stem i ordered new logo's with Gil_M from the retrobike forum, i will order some new decals for the seatpost aswell.
Got them before from Gil, they look great.

When i look at the bike right now I am not satisfied with the look of the Campa crank,..to much silver ..... :$
I think i will take the cranks of and save them for the KLEIN ATTITUDE TEAM '91 which i want to buy next year.

Syncros Revolution Cranks

I always had a soft spot for the SYNCROS brand.
On all of my builds you will find some of them, The Stems are a must have classic, the bars are great, the seatposts are one of the most wanted once (especially the 29,4mm sized, but i just love the Revolution cranks.
At the moment i have 2 sets, the last one i bought was broken at the paddle connection and a great friend who has all the right connections helped me out and it looks like new again, really stunning,..THANKS MARTIJN!

The other set I bought form a retrobike member the beginning of this year and looks like to be something really special.
This set has a engraved SYNCROS brand name instead of the normal sticker.
I looked trough the internet and asked around hoping to find the answer but the only reaction i got is that it must be really very very rare,..

I also found the original installation manual; http://web.archive.org/web/19961226004841/www.syncros.com/pdf/CrStEng.pdf

The set with the engraved SYNCROS logo is currently fit on my Boulder Bicycles Defiant which has SYNCROS parts all over

Handlebar: Fybrelyte for now but will be replaced by a Titanium Kolo flat bar
Grips: not available yet but i would like to use some OURY grips

Brakes: Shimano XTR M900
Brake Pads: Shimano XTR M900
Brake Levers/Shifters: Shimano XTR STI M900

Front Derailleur: Shimano XTR M900
Rear Derailleur: Shimano XTR M900

Seatpost: Syncros Titanium
Seatpost Binder: Ringle but i also have a NOS Cook Bros which would look nice icw the Skewers but i have to look it up.

Weight: no clue what so ever but it feels light right now

Some of these parts were intended for the Serotta TiMax but i want to move some parts over
Today i have bought a silver Paul front derrailleur and i still have a silver rear Paul so i will use these for the Serotta build.
I do not want to use them on the Fat because the fat will be the rider of the 2 and i just trust the M900 gear more in action.
And because i like the look of complete groups i will be using the STI's on the Fat and move the Paul Thumbies to the Serotta.
Now i have to find some Paul levers to complete that.
With regards to the brakes on the Serotta i want to use the NOS Control Tech cantis i have available.
I have been thinking about Onza Hola's or Onza Ho's bt these CT's are just more special and will look good on the Black and White build, completed with the Syncros Revolution cranks.

And i am also thinking of replacing the Brooks or the flite sadle, might be a bit better looking ,.. :$

Fat Chance update

hi guys,

just a small update on the Fat Chance Yo Eddy project.
I was puting the parts of and on, changing them frequently and i think i know what i am going to do, sort of ;-)
And again i am using the Syncros brand, how surprising ;-) hehehe

From all the seatposts i have i will be using the black post.

And i think I know what is wrong with the allover look of the bike,.. i was discussing this with Martijn, it just did not seem to be right, like it was missing something,..it's the wheelset.
I replaced the ritchey Speedmax by WTB tryres which have a bit more body and it looks a bit better but the solution will have to be, darker rims.
These Campagnolo rims just look to shiney, i guess greyish mavic sub rims will do the job,..and when i am going to replace the rims i guys the hubs will be replaced by some silver or black once now i am at it...

Then there are the other parts
There is now a ringle TiStix seatclamb installed, the ringle Blue Ti-Stix at the wheels will be de-anodized and polished to match the other one, the Syncros Revolutions will get a new biggest ring, also Syncros but one less goldy,..will replace it with the one i have on the Serotta, i guess for both bikes it will work out better.

here some more pictures

Some candy from my dear friend Aaron

Received some nice stuff today from the US

in the package there was a nice set of wheels, Chris King Hubed, red alu nipples, and WTB rims.
A great looking set in my Fat Chance.
also there was a set of Avid brake levers, my god what are these light!
I got to get myself a digital scale,..i would like to mention the weight of some parts here but now i can't,..i just can tell you that these (feel) are light and that's it ;)
The model name of these levers i do not know, the look like early Ulimate's but i do not know for sure.

Next item is a titanium stem,..but not just a stem,...but this one !

Have you aver seen such welds? It's a Moots stem customized by Jim Kish.
i looked at the stem and was amazed by the beauty of it,..so pretty.
Again i do not know what the weight is but it has to be something exotic ;)

on the picture at the top you also see a a Hang Doggy from Syncros
The Syncros Hang Doggy is a binder type of cable hanger forged of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. The platform for the cable is 11mm thick and bored for a special machined brass cable routing piece. The front of the platform is cut vertically for the cable to slide in place. The brass tube fits into this with a 90 degree outward turn. The cable housing slides into the front end and the inner wire slides along the smooth interior of the of the self lubricating tube. A hole is bored through the side of the clamp piece. The hole is tapped with threads for the binding bolt, then the front is cut to make the binding mechanism. A steel bolt draws the clamp tight.

The Hang Doggy is made in 3 sizes, 1", 1 1/8" or 1 1/4". The two smaller sizes are the same but the 1" size has a 1.52mm wall thickness split aluminum shim which reduces the 1 1/8" interior to the needed 1". The Clamp piece is anodized Black and the brass piece is polished then clear coated to hold its finish. The 1" size weighs 37.5 grams, the 1 1/8" size weighs 34.5 grams, and the 1 1/4" weighs 30.5 grams. (It weighs less because a larger hole is drilled through the same aluminum forging used to make the other two.) The brass piece is 7 grams of each of these weights.

SYNCROS cranks ENGRAVING mystery -> Solved

Received a reaction form the pre-previous owner about the engraved SYNCROS brand name..

He had it done in a Jewelry shop because we was fed up with the sticker decals rubbing of,..

De-Anodizing bike parts

Let me first explain wat anodizing (anodising) is;

Anodizing, or anodising, is an electrolytic passivation process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts. Anodizing increases corrosion resistance and wear resistance, and provides better adhesion for paint primers and glues than bare metal. Anodic films can also be used for a number of cosmetic effects, either with thick porous coatings that can absorb dyes or with thin transparent coatings that add interference effects to reflected light. Anodizing is also used to prevent galling of threaded components and to make dielectric films for electrolytic capacitors. Anodic films are most commonly applied to protect aluminium alloys.
Anodization changes the microscopic texture of the surface and can change the crystal structure of the metal near the surface. Coatings are often porous, even when thick, so a sealing process is often needed to achieve corrosion resistance. The process is called "anodizing" because the part to be treated forms the anode electrode of an electrical circuit. Anodized aluminium surfaces, for example, are harder than aluminium but have low to moderate wear resistance that can be improved with increasing thickness or by applying suitable sealing substances. Anodic films are generally much stronger and more adherent than most types of paint and metal plating, making them less likely to crack and peel.

I received a Syncros seatpost a couple of weeks ago and this arrived a bit more scuffed then expected, in a condition i do not use for my bikes and therefore i was thinking about de-anodizing the post (and maybe re-anodize in the future) so it looks better then scuffed black.
I've looked around on the internet and found out that putting the item for 5 minutes in caustic soda will do the trick (caustic soda is used to unblock a blocked sink.
Because i did not want to try it on the seatpost to start with i took some old Hope QR's apart and put them in,..
These were scuffed too and i couldn't care less if it went wrong ;)

This is how they looked;

and this is what i used.
Unfortunately is it in Dutch but it is a 2 component soda from the brand HG

You have to put from both bottles even parts in a small box (I use the old Chinese restaurant rice boxes ;) )
enough to put the part under

I put it in,..and after 2 minutes you could see the soda do it's work

After 4 minutes i took it out with a clamp and rinsed it of with cold water.
It turned black but all the red was gone.

I took some stainless steel polish and polished it up,..and the black came right of,..
After that i took some silver polish but i do not know if that made a difference although the cloth became grey using it.
This is how it looked after the polishing, the whole "project" took about 20 minutes,..and the result looks nice
Even the HOPE brandname is still visible

Next up was the seatpost.
Because i did not have to box big enough i used my parents sink and the yellow patch.
I put it in the caustic soda en put it on the post and almost immediately the black came off (purple)

Same process, rinse with water,..and polish,...
Also very satisfied with the result.
Black Syncros decals are on it;s way from Gil_M

I am very pleased with the result , especially if you look at how easy it goes.
BUT PLEASE BE AWARE<>>>THIS SODA IS TOXIC!!!!,..YOU SHOULD WEAR GLOVES DURING THIS PROCESS!!!!
There are also some ovencleaners that might work,..bit "saver" but less strong so my might have to put the parts in longer to get the same result

What to do when you have the flu

Right!,..change the bike that you thought was finished ;)

I replaced again some parts, i was still not satisfied with the looks.
You can say that i am desideless but Rome wasn't build in one day either.
I just need some time to work on the build,..play around, and let it work.

I took the Tioga Disk out again, and replaced it with a new wheelset (Silver Chris King Hubs, DT spokes, Mavic X517 Ceramic rims)
It is a gorgeous set of weels, i have the same in the Serotta, i just love the looks and also the soud it makes ;RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR ;)

And then some other parts got replaced;
The Black Syncros Seatpost and bar are now Titanium once, and the Flite Sadel is now a period correct Titanium Flite Sadle

Now it is finally ready to make the first spin around the block -> i know, i am imberrased but i have never used it, not even sat on it,... (Oeps;) )

Fat Chance Tioga update

Put the Tioga Disc Drive in the Fat Chance.
I just couldn't wait ;)
I still have to do some adjusting, it is not centered correctly but that will be something for between X-Mas and New Year, when i have some spare time.
I also bought to match the Tioga Disc a NOS set of Tioga Psycho Kevlar tyres.
i do not know yet if i like the amber skin wall over the all black tyres but for now it will do.
For the front wheel I am looking for a old SYNCROS hub, found one on ebay and will let the sniper do it's work.

The Fat Chance Yo Eddy Team project

The bike I am currently working on is the Fat Chance Yo Eddy Team in the colour Aquafade.
I bought this bike as a frame only (with some parts) and a Rock Shock Judy XC but sold the fork because I am not such a fan of that fork,..and found a matching original rigid Yo eddy forl.
This was a very pricey purchase but am happy that I did, it looks great!

today i put some parts on because i want to know how it looks,..

Still do not know which parts i will be using in the build,..currently i am buying some parts double, Campagnolo and Syncros so i can play around,..

If you have some parts or tips for me how i should build this bike,..just tell me ;)

UPDATE:
